Methodical Framework and Examplesof an Environmental Innovative Product Development

Abstract
Innovative products are the base capacity for industrial manufacturers and traders to compete in fast changing markets and are consequently the foundation of our social welfare. In opposition to standard products, modern and market-leading products increasingly consist of complex combinations of highly integrated components using electronic, mechanic and information technologies. Contemporaneous, modern and up-to-date products are designed in environmental conscious manner to break new ground on the path to a real sustainable future. This presumes the inclusion of many different engineering sciences in the product development process. To master the multifaceted operating requirements of a state of the art product development, interdisciplinary knowledge is merged together in the Bavarian Network for the Development of Innovative Technologies (BEnefiT), which was founded at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. The first BEnefiT project, also known as “The Vacuum Cleaner Project”, has demonstrated the possibility to attain even on output-provoked products the improvements for each product life phase and also the benefits for all participants in the life cycle. This was reached by use of a methodical, system-oriented procedure according to an Integrated Product Policy (IPP) in a unusual short period of time of approximately 1.5 years.
